Teaching Philosophy
________________________________________________________________________________________

In my work I emphasize the relevance of object making in contemporary art and design. Introducing students to the basic sculptural processes is part of my vision. In my class students will develop technical skills within each project while exploring their ideas.

I want students to work without limitations. Developing three dimensional design skills will allow students to concentrate on a variety of contemporary concepts regardless of their focus. Strong three - dimensional skills will enhance all facets of creativity and learning for any student of art and design. I excel at introducing students to a wide range of sculptural techniques and processes. This is because I am genuinely interested in what I am teaching. Metal fabrication, woodworking, mold making, casting, and carving are areas I introduce and encourage. I set up the studio to facilitate this kind of work and experimentation forgoing other less complicated alternatives. I am committed to helping them understand traditional methods and basics of object making before moving into the other genres associated with Sculpture.

The sequence of introducing these projects at the right time is essential. Technical craft, problem solving, and portfolio, are areas I encourage students to develop. At the most basic level, I want them to become comfortable working in a studio. I am comfortable giving demonstrations and I understand the nuances of the materials. I have made these methods the core part of my personal work, which in turn makes me the ideal person to share this kind of knowledge.
